Meghalaya
is situated in the north-eastern
region of India,
between the Brahmaputra
valley in the north and
the Bangladesh in the
south. The state of Meghalaya
(the abode of clouds)
is geographically known
as the "Meghalaya
Plateau"
or the "Shillong
Plateau".
It is the detached north-eastern
extension of the Peninsular
India. Part of it lies
buried under the alluvium
deposited by the Ganga-Brahmaputra
system of rivers.
Meghalaya was carved out of Assam and got its statehood on 21st January 1972. Naturally blessed with tumbling waterfalls, beautiful lakes, high plateaus, misty heights, luxurious vegetation, virgin forests and abundant rainfalls, Maghalaya is undoubtedly called 'Abode of Clouds'. The state is broadly divided into Khasi hills, Jaintia hills and Garo Hills.

describes the climatic
phenomenon that brings
torrents of rain to this
region.
Meghalaya is a region
of great scenic beauty;
a panorama of lush, undulating
hills, fertile valleys,
250 species of orchids,
meandering rivers, waterfalls,
sparkling mountain streams
and lakes.
The State is divided into
three hilly regions -
the Garo Hills (Western
Meghalaya), the Khasi
Hills (Central Meghalaya)
and the Jaintia Hills
(Eastern Meghalaya). The
place with its rich cultural
heritage, breath taking
heights, beautiful waterfalls,
luxurious lush green carpets,
exotic flora and fauna
is a paradise for honey
mooners and tourists.
It is among the wettest
places on earth.

Tourist
attractions in Meghalaya
Cherrapunji:
Cherrapunji termed as the wettest place on Earth, is a tourist spot at a distance of 56 kms away from Shillong. It is situated at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level. At this steep waterfalls, the water cascades over to the deep gorges with a roar and one can always see a rainbow near the waterfall when there is enough light to break through. These waterfalls found here make an excellent place for picnicking.
Shillong
: Shillong is
the capital of Meghalaya.
It is described as 'Mini
London'. There are many
legends surrounding the
name Shillong. One says
that it originated from
the name of a handsome
youth called Shyllong. The Shillong
Peak: 10kms
away from the city
is the highest point (1965mtrs),
which offers a panoramic
view of the countryside.
Ward's
Lake : The picturesque
lake is set amid rolling
flowerbeds and fairyland
lighting.
Sohpetbneng Peak
: Against the
backdrop of a green forest,
the sacred peak is regarded
as the 'Navel of Heaven'
as per Khasi mythology.
For peace of mind, this
might be an ideal retreat.
Shillong
Cathedra : The
beautiful church was built
by the British. It is
as spacious as to accommodate
a few thousand worshippers.
Waterfalls in
Meghalaya : The
state can boast of a number
of waterfalls, which emerge
from the unpolluted rushing
streams plunge down the
steep mountains, turn
twist and disappear in
the jungle. Some noted
waterfalls are Spread
Eagle Falls, Elephant
Falls, Crinoline Falls,
Noh Kalikai Falls, Dain
Thlen Falls, Mawsmai Falls,
Imilchang Dare.
Caves in Meghalaya
: The state is
dotted with numerous natural
caves. Exploring the strange
natural formations through
murky interiors is a thrilling
experience for some. The
Khasi, Jaiantia and Garo
Hills are replete with
such caves, which are
major tourist attractions
in Meghalaya. Some notable
caves are, Mawsmai Cave,
Krem Mawmluh, The Cave
of Eocene age, Krem Kotsati,
Krem Umshangktat, Siju-Dobkhakol,
Tetengkol-Balwakol etc.
Lady
Hydari Park : It
has a very attractive
garden and the best months
to see the flowers in
bloom are April to October.
Next to the park, is a
mini zoo, where many species
of birds and animals are
kept.
Museum
of Entomology : This
place is a treasure house
of various kinds of exquisite
Meghalayan butterflies
and insects, some of which
are bred and reared by
naturalists and then preserved.
WILDLIFE
IN MEGHALAYA:
The state has two National
Parks - Nobrek and Balpakam,
and two wildlife sanctuaries
- Nongkyllem and Siju. |
