Tourist
attractions in Tamil Nadu
Rameswaram
: Rameswaram
is a small island in the
Gulf of Mannar. It is
an important pilgrim center.
Lord Rama on return from
Lanka stopped over here
first for a thanksgiving
to the Gods. The Ramanathaswamy
temple here is well-known
for its massive corridors.
The sea water in front
of the temple is sacred
and is known as Agnitheertham.
Kanyakumari
: Kanyakumari
is at the southernmost
tip of India and its where
three seas meet: the Bay
of Bengal, Indian Ocean
and Arabian sea. Pilgrims
come here to bathe in
the sacred waters and
to worship the goddess
Devi Kanya, an incarnation
of Shiva's wife,who conquered
demons and secured freedom
for the world.
Madurai
: A very old
city, Madurai is situated
on the banks of Vaigai
river. The legendary Meenakshi
temple and the ancient
part of the city are on
the southern bank. The
Thirumalai Nayak Mahal,
the palace, is another
sight in the town.
Kodaikanal
: A sleepy, beautiful
hill station situated
in the Palani Hills, 120
km from Madurai, is Kodaikkanal.
It has a star-shaped,
man-made lake called Kodai
lake. Kodai has an observatory
from where one can observe
the stars. Vaigai dam,
Shola Falls, Silver Cascade
(8 km) Kumbakkarai Falls
(65 km), Berijam lake
(21 km), Perumal peak,
Kukkal Caves (40 km),
and Dolmen's Circle (22
km) are some of the sites
that may be visited.
Mudumallai
: Mudumallai
wildlife reserve was the
first sanctuary in south
India. The terrain is
extremely varied with
hills, valleys, ravines,
watercourses and swamps.
The vegetation comprises
of tropical moist deciduous
forests, dry deciduous
forests and scrub forests.
Langur, bonnet macaque,
tiger, leopard, wild dog,
hyena, jackal, sloth bear,
elephants, gaur, sambar,
spotted deer, Indian muntjac,
mouse deer, wild boar,
rodent and flying squirrel
are part of the wildlife
in Mudumalai.
Yelagiri
: The main attraction
of the tourists in Yelagiri
is to enjoy boating in
beautiful and smallish
artificial lake famous
as Punganoor Lake. Velvan
Temple is other prime
attraction for tourists.
This is a temple dedicated
to Lord Murugan situated
atop a hillock, with a
giant statue of Gadothgajan
in front. Jalagamparai
Waterfalls is a lovely
waterfall about an hour's
trek from Yelagiri has
been created by the Attaru
River, which flows through
the Yelagiri hills. It's
a very attractive spots
for loving couples.
Trichirappalli
: A city of historical
importance. It is situated
on the banks of Kaveri
river. There is a temple
on the top called Uchipillaiyar
Koil. Below, one can see
Pallava cave temples wherein
there are 6th and 7th
century sculptures. Nearesrt
pilgrim centers are Srirangam
(7 km ), Thiruvanaikaval-Jambukeswarar
temple (8 km),Vayaloor
(8 km) and Samayapuram
(20 km). Kallanai (24
km) is the oldest dam.St.
John's Church- Built in
1812, this Church has
doors, which when opened,
turns the church into
an airy pavilion.
Thanjavur
: Thanjavur has
a rich heritage of the
arts and learning of the
medieval period. The place
is known for handicrafts
and musical instruments. |
